Your skin is dry, itchy, red, painful and flaky. You have scaly patches of skin on your body. You are one of the millions of Americans living with psoriasis. Turns out unsightly patches of dry, flaky skin is the least of your problems. Studies have suggested the condition is

tied to a higher chance of having heart disease or suffering a heart attack or stroke. And if that wasnt troublesome enough, a new study now indicates a link between psoriasis and diabetes as well.

Dr. Rahat Azfar, the lead author on the study from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia says that body-wide inflammation is seen in patients with psoriasis and those with type 2 diabetes, which may explain the link between the two conditions. Its possible, according to Dr. Azfar, that psoriasis may induce that chronic inflammation through changes in the bloodstream, increasing a patients risk of developing diabetes.

The good news is that psoriasis patients can and should take immediate preventative measures to protect their health and well-being. Dr. Azfar says, Those with psoriasis, especially severe psoriasis, should take extra precautions to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly to ward off diabetes.

How to Reduce Inflammation Caused By Psoriasis

Its extremely important to manage inflammation caused by psoriasis. One of the simplest, most natural ways to do this is to incorporate Omega-3 into your diet. Omega-3s play a critical role in the inflammatory process and it has been noted that a deficiency of dietary omega-3 produces a cascade of effects ultimately responsible for the symptoms of psoriasis (The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, January 2000)

Numerous published medical studies highlight the benefits of Omega-3s on psoriasis related inflammation. In many studies, a majority of patients experienced significant results after beginning an Omega-3 supplementation program.

Omega-3s are found in oily fish (such as salmon, trout, mackerel, herring and sardines) and flaxseed (linseed) oil. Interestingly, it has been noted that Greenland Eskimos who have a high intake of omega-3 fats from fish also have a low incidence of psoriasis.

What If I Dont Like Fish?

If you dont want to or cant add fish into your daily diet, taking an Omega-3 supplement is the next best thing. Be careful when shopping for Omega-3 supplements as they are NOT all created equal. There are different kinds of Omega 3 – not all of which have the same health benefits. There are many Omega-3 supplements that actually contain little, if any, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) – the most important forms of Omega-3. Omega 3 fats found in fish and seafood is considered the most valuable.
